The Maya is a handloom cotton tube maxi from Hulasi — woven in West Bengal, India, in warm yellow with fine pink and orange stripes running through the fabric. The smocked bodice fits and holds without boning. The full pleated skirt moves beautifully. There are pockets.

Wear it to a Sunday market with flat sandals and nothing else. Throw a camel coat over it and ankle boots for a winter evening and it transforms entirely. This is the dress that earns its place in a wardrobe built on taste rather than trend.
